Fiberglass Side Shell

Charles Eames, Ray Eames

This Sea Foam Green Light shell still has its original shockmounts. When Ray and Charles began to mass-produce fiberglass chairs they were advised by Herman Miller’s D. J. De Pree to start with the most difficult design to fabricate—the Armchair. After the Armchair went into production, the duo discovered that, in fact, the Side Shell was far more challenging. They spent several years working on the prototypes to create a satisfactory final design.

There are marks on the shell underside, a backward “B”, a circle Herman Miller medallion, an embossed Herman Miller logo, and a paper manufacturer’s patent label.
