Fiberglass Side Shell

Charles Eames, Ray Eames

When the chairs were introduced, the first three colors were Parchment, Greige, and Elephant Hide Gray—all very neutral. But, not long after, they came in Red and Yellow (seen here). Eventually, the variety of colors expanded to more than twenty, each one approved by Ray and Charles.

An embossed Cincinnati Milling Machine Company logo (“C” with a six-pointed star), an embossed Herman Miller logo, and handwritten “448-41-4” are on the underside of the shell.
