Fiberglass Side Shell

Charles Eames, Ray Eames

c. 1970

This Khaki shell has its original shockmounts and was once mounted on a DSX base. When Ray and Charles were designing the shells, they were thinking about seating systems, and it led them to create a single shell that could be mounted to a variety of different types of bases for different needs. The DSX base is an abbreviation for dining (D) side chair (S) on a four-legged base (X).

Based on the embossed mark on this chair, it was made around 1970. A backward “Z”, the Summit logo (backward “B”, “A”, “S” inside a circle), and an embossed Herman Miller logo and word mark are on the underside of the shell.
