Before They Were the Eameses

Schocken Department Store, Stuttgart, Germany

Charles Eames

1929

Charles married his first wife, Catherine Dewey Woermann, in 1929. Their honeymoon took them on a tour of Europe to see classic and modern architecture across England, France, Belgium, and Germany. Charles recorded their travels in a series of sketches. He later turned some of these into etchings, including this image featuring early modernist architect Erich Mendelsohn's 1926 Schocken department store.
