DTM-1 (Dining Table Metal)

1948

This walnut-topped table is part of the Eameses’ DTM series of dining tables with collapsible metal bases that was designed in 1947. Also available with a birch wood or plastic laminate top, the design’s steel legs fold into a recess underneath its top, making it easy to move and store. This was of particular benefit to customers in the postwar period, as increasing levels of consumption made new demands on home storage space. Additionally, the flat-folded tables were both easier and cheaper to ship than conventional tables (cheaper because shipping costs were calculated by volume rather than weight).
