In 1955, Charles Eames sent this postcard to Ray from France where he was directing second unit photography for Billy Wilder’s Charles Lindbergh biopic, The Spirit of St. Louis. Not only did the Eames Office build a model of Lindbergh’s airplane for the film, but Charles was responsible for aerial photographs and sequences showing the airplane’s construction. Charles’s affinity for the project was twofold: the designer remembered well the sensation Lindbergh caused in his hometown of St. Louis when the aviator began flying an airmail route to Chicago; he also had a fondness for the kind of complex, but useful and unselfconscious design that Lindbergh’s airplane represented. Charles’s missive details the elaborate on-set meals and robust appetites of the 300+ crew involved in the production, and is written on a card featuring a naïve painting of a watermelon created by a 13-year-old Italian student.
