Plywood During the War

Small Leg Splint Sculpture

Ray Eames

1943

The striking brown form shares a visual language with the Eameses’ logo design for their company at this time, the Molded Plywood Division of the Evans Products Company. This piece, cut with a scroll saw and then stained brown, is one of only three known splint sculptures. The design suggests it was meant to be suspended, like a mobile.
