Gauze Study for Side Shell

Ray and Charles Eames preferred to work hands-on, prototyping directly with materials. They built small mock-ups and full-size models, like the one here, as a way to test ideas in real time. Made with a gauzy textile that held its shape as it dried, this early model was an exploration of form. By observing what materials could and couldn’t do, the Eameses let their designs come from their learning—each solution informing the next.
