Charles often said what he wished for most was a pair of well-darned socks. In fact, the Eameses lived by an ethos of “don’t replace, repair.” There’s a symmetry to this piece, which has an electrical tape patch on its vinyl upholstery applied by Eames Office staff. Ray and Charles were known for keeping their old clothing by patching holes and darning tears. This sensible green patch feels very fitting. MSX-1 stands for Medium (height) Side (chair) X (base) 1 (upholstered).

The Cincinnati Milacron Incorporated logo (“C” with inscribed star) and the Herman Miller logo and word mark are embossed on the underside of the shell. There is also an “UNDER PENALTY OF LAW” sticker with the date of delivery stamp “JAN 10, 1972” and “7721” written in red ink.
