Wrapped Leg Splint
The Eameses designed leg splints for use by the US military during the Second World War upon learning that soldier’s wounds were being made worse by the regulation metal splints, which amplified vibrations. This splint is shown in its original wrapping, which would have protected its exterior during transport. The Eameses created the splints to be easily transported, carried, and stored by nesting one within another, like stacked spoons. Once a shipment arrived at its destination, the molded contour of the splint would comfortably support the entire leg of an injured soldier in any circumstance, including during an evacuation from the front lines to a base for treatment…
“1 SPLINT, LEG. PLYWOOD FOR TRANSPORTATION, STOCK No. S2-1790 [Evans Logo] MANUFACTURED BY [Eames designed logo] EVANS PRODUCTS COMPANY MOLDED PLYWOOD DIVISION LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA” is printed in black ink on a label attached to the wrapping.
