EC434 Adjustable Tilt-Swivel Armchair

In 1968, spurred by their European counterparts, Herman Miller introduced a new wider and deeper upholstered fiberglass chair distinguished by broader, more subtly arcing lines. Although the earliest versions of this design were imported from abroad, these shells were eventually produced stateside by Century Plastics (as indicated by the CPi logomark stamped on the underside of this example). Despite the fact that the Eameses devised the Loose Cushion Armchair as a preferable alternative to this design, the larger shells remained in the line and were eventually given a new product designation when paired with the Universal base. The chair was available with glides or casters and could be specified in four textiles, or as is the case here, in a combination of a vinyl back with a Hopsak seat. This mixed textile variant of the fiberglass chair was first launched in 1966 as the “Dash Ninety Nine.
