EC228 Secretarial Chair

Evolving from the development of the EC127, the EC228 offers a series of further enhancements to adapt the design for longer-term sitting, mobility, and adjustability in the workplace. The basic premise of contoured fiberglass shells with integral upholstered pads remains from the earlier design, however a new spider attachment welded to a steel shaft allowed the chair to be paired with the height-adjustable Universal base. A newly developed chrome-plated spine element inserts into the spider at the back of the chair, while two machined slots at the attachment points (of the seat and back) allow for the user to adjust both the depth and height of the back by loosening and tightening a pair of die-cast aluminum knobs. Predating the Ergon Chair by five years, the EC228 represents one of Herman Miller’s earliest forays into what would eventually become one of their key product categories: ergonomic task seating. The two models of secretarial chairs are differentiated by the depth of their padding. This EC228 features boxed cushion edges and is upholstered in Milnilo, a textile designed by Alexander Girard.
