EA422 Tilt-Swivel Reclining Lounge Chair (with Casters)
Based on the commercial success of its predecessors, in 1973 the Eames Office added three new designs to the Soft Pad Group: a reclining lounge chair (available both with and without arms), and accompanying ottoman. This new design features under-seat mechanisms similar to those devised for the tilt-swivel version of the desk chair, and replaces the fixed cast aluminum antler form with a more utilitarian cross bar that attaches to the seat with fin-like arms (the concurrent Aluminum Group version, EA322 Tilt-Swivel Reclining Lounge Chair, utilizes the same updates). To support the sitter’s head while reclined, this new version of the chair adds an additional “soft pad” to the chair’s back extending its height an additional 5.5 inches to enable the ultimate in “luxurious relaxation.” This example, which came from the Eames Office at 901 Washington Boulevard, is mounted on casters—an option that was never available commercially.
