EA219 Tilt-Swivel High Back Desk Armchair

This High Back Desk Armchair, which could accommodate a range of postures thanks to its tilt-swivel mechanism, provides its occupant with a comfortable, supportive, and responsive seat. The luxurious chair, like the rest of the Soft Pad Group, was intended for use in workplaces as executive seating (with a lower cost and more optionality than the Eames Executive Chair based on the earlier Time-Life designs). As Eames furniture transitioned from designs purchased for home use by individual customers, to contract sales for public spaces like offices, airports, and hospitals, the Eames Office placed greater and greater emphasis on issues of quality and durability. In the case of the Soft Pad Group, labor-intensive double-needle top stitching was used to ensure the cushions would remain intact, and the cast aluminum arms were covered with a black nylon or clear cellulosic coating, as seen in this example—to avoid scrapes and scratches and to modulate the temperature of the aluminum.
