LCW Limited Edition (Two-Tone)

When the Eames molded plywood furniture was introduced to the world at the Museum of Modern Art’s 1946 exhibition—presented much like the debut of a new artist—Ray and Charles supplied a range of plywood chairs, tables, and screens. Singular among the chairs were striking two-toned versions, with black legs and spine paired with natural wood seats and backs.

More than half a century later, in 1998, Vitra produced a limited edition of two-tone LCWs—a direct call back to those earliest expressions of the design, and a reminder that even at the beginning, the Eameses were willing to experiment with contrast, material, and visual tension.

Gift of Vitra.
