St. Mary’s Church in Arkansas

Later in life, Charles looked back fondly on his early days of architecture working on projects like this church in Arkansas. He reflected that during the Great Depression, the architect had to do everything—design the lighting, pews, and vestments, carve the sculptures, and even help construct the building. The Arkansas churches drew the attention of Eliel Saarinen and earned Charles an invitation to Cranbrook.
