Handmade Fiberglass Study for Side Shell

Charles Eames, Ray Eames

1951

Working with fiberglass was a departure from Ray and Charles’s process of molding plywood. Fiberglass afforded all kinds of new design possibilities while also posing new challenges. The smooth surface on the front and the rough surface on the back indicates that this shell was made by hand.
