Photograph of Young Lucia and Charles

Lucia was born and raised in St. Louis, like both of her parents. With this continuity, she grew close to her extended family on both Charles’s and Catherine’s sides. She would maintain these strong ties later in life. Charles’s only daughter would follow in her father’s footsteps, studying with Bauhaus architect Walter Gropius while she was a student at Radcliffe College and eventually becoming a designer herself. This undated photograph shows a close bond between father and daughter.
