Photograph of Charles with Dog

This pocket-sized photograph was included in a family scrapbook. It shows Charles, then a student at Washington University, crouched on the ground and holding a spaniel. The snapshot was taken in the countryside near St. Louis, where Charles was born and raised. A blurred object in the foreground, possibly the stray finger of an unidentified photographer, gives the image the spontaneous and intimate mood of a personal memento.
