MSX-1

Charles Eames, Ray Eames

1962

This Parchment shell—the first color introduced in the Side Chair design—is upholstered in Girard Khaki Hopsak and held together by foam-in-place technology. After the upholstery was sewn to the padding and wrapped around the shell, foam was injected between the padding and shell to fuse them together. The plug over the hole on the underside of the site is missing on this example, showing where the foam was injected. MSX-1 stands for Medium (height) Side (chair) X (base) 1 (upholstered).

The Cimastra Division logo (“C” with a six-pointed star) and the Herman Miller logo are embossed on the underside of the shell.
