Three quarter side view of an angled wooden plank that was used to display the Eames Lounge Chair three point spider or base.

Lounge Chair Spider Pattern Display Board

This raised plank was made as a display stand for the three-point spider. The name and address stamp suggest it was once loaned out by Ray and Charles in an exhibition.

As Ralph Caplan observed, “Charles was not always teaching, but when you were around him, you were always learning.” Their decision to display an early iteration of a single component—especially one like the three-point spider, which was ultimately never put into production—reflects a deep enthusiasm for sharing process, not just results.

Where many designers concealed their methods behind a curtain, Ray and Charles left it open, inviting others to see, understand, and learn.
