Interiors Magazine Covers

During Olga Gueft’s years as editor, Interiors magazine was one of the most important design publications in the United States, serving as a forum for postwar furniture, interiors, industrial design, and modern living. At a time when many architects still regarded interiors as secondary to architecture—or simply as decoration—Gueft argued, through the pages of Interiors, that interior design was a serious discipline connected to industry, planning, graphics, and everyday life itself. Under her leadership, the magazine became one of the main places where architects, designers, manufacturers, and clients encountered new ideas about modern environments.

Gueft’s editorial approach placed interior design in close conversation with architecture, furniture, textiles, graphics, and industrial design, rather than treating it as decoration alone. This helped shift professional attitudes toward interior design, especially within corporate, institutional, and modern residential work. She gave sustained attention to figures like Florence Knoll, Alexander Girard, and the Eames Office, whose work crossed traditional disciplinary boundaries.

Gueft also recognized that the Eames Office operated differently from many conventional design practices of the period. Through Interiors, she presented Ray and Charles Eames not simply as furniture designers, but as part of a broader shift in how modern environments were being conceived and organized. Charles Eames corresponded directly with Gueft on design and technical matters, reflecting the seriousness with which he regarded both the magazine. Some of that correspondence is preserved today in the Eames Institute collections.
