DTW-50 Table

1953

Although considered part of the Dining Table Wood, or DTW, series, this DTW-50 was not a dining table but a 15-inch-tall coffee table. Introduced in 1952, it featured the same wood dowel legs that had been used for the series since 1950. While these were new to the Eameses’ commercial designs they were not entirely new to the designers. Charles had first used dowel legs over a decade earlier, as part of the design for casework that he and Eero Saarinen had submitted to the Museum of Modern Art’s Organic Design in Home Furnishing competition. This coffee table utilized the same tabletop as the DTW-40 card table and is therefore typical of the Eameses’ approach to mix-and-match bases. Though it was only in production for two years, the DTW-50 coffee table was offered in several finishes, including the birch veneer seen here, as well as a walnut veneer and black or white laminate.
