Three quarter view of the Eames DTW-30 Table with a plastic laminate top and solid birch dowel legs.

DTW-30 Table

Although the first Dining Table Wood, or DTW, was introduced in 1946, this 1950 model offers a significant revision of the original design. Whereas the earlier DTWs feature tapered molded plywood legs that were creased to form a corner, the new design had solid wooden legs made from round dowels (both versions were detachable for easy shipping and storage). The solid dowels made for a sturdier table than their predecessors. The DTW’s tabletop was also changed in 1950 and made identical to the one used for the metal-legged DTM tables. This example has a plastic laminate surface, however, they were also available in a variety of wood veneers. Consolidating the design of the tops cut down on production costs and rationalized the series in general. The dowel leg tables were discontinued in 1956.
