DSS

Charles Eames, Ray Eames

1958

The DSS model was a game changer for Ray and Charles. Herman Miller sold these chairs to schools and auditoriums in the tens of thousands. The innovative base allowed fourteen chairs to stack in the floor space of one, and the ganging feature helped create long, tidy rows of chairs. This base was developed just as the Eameses perfected the thickness and strength of the Side Shell. DSS stands for Dining (height) Side (chair) Stacking (base).

“Summit Prime” is stamped in black ink and “508231” is printed in black ink on the underside of the shell.
