David (Particolare), Donatello (1386–1466)

Charles Eames traveled to Europe between July 8 and August 1, 1973, with stops first in New York, and then on to London, Cambridge, Florence, Pisa, and Paris. In Florence, according to his itinerary, he had a chance to meet up with his dear friend and collaborator, Alexander Girard, and Girard’s mother, Leslie Cutler Girard. He took the time while in Florence to purchase and mail this postcard featuring a bronze by the renaissance master to his sister, Adele, and her husband, Vincent Franks—and acknowledged Adele’s parting gift of cookies, which seem to have sustained Charles (and “all who partake”) on his travels.
