Charles Eames Business Card for Plyformed Wood Company

This business card for the Plyformed Wood Company prominently features the logo designed by Ray. “Plyformed wood” was the copyrighted name the Eameses gave to wood veneers they bonded together with a resin glue and molded using a process involving heat and pressure. Using this technique, the Eameses were able to shape bonded veneers into curves without straining or breaking the stacked strips. They originated this process to test designs for chairs, refined it during the war to support the military with supplies, and mastered it when they returned to making furniture on a large scale.
