Ray and Charles solved the problem of accommodating various body types by producing the Drafting Chair in three heights: small, medium, and large. This medium height Drafting Chair is the first version, introduced in 1953. A threaded post, located under the seat, offered three additional inches of height adjustability. The Herman Miller sales team, concerned that the Drafting Chair’s expense and fewer features than others on the market would deter sales, later discovered their worries were unfounded as sales exceeded expectations.

The Herman Miller logo and word mark is embossed on the underside of the shell.
