DSX-1

Charles Eames, Ray Eames

1960

Ray and Charles paid attention to how their furniture performed in use. As attractive and functional as the wraparound upholstery was, the edges of the material tended to split after five to ten years of everyday use. The Eames solution was a sewn-on rubber edge, which they introduced in 1961 and continued until the fiberglass chair production was temporarily discontinued in 1993. DSX-1 stands for Dining (height) Side (chair) X (base) 1 (upholstered).

Flames and the Herman Miller logo and word mark are embossed on the underside of the shell.
